HYPNOSIS IN THE MEDIA

I recently watched the Tv show True Crimes. The first episode is called “Look into my eyes”. It tells the story of a school principal who hypnotized his students to help with both academic and sports performance. From what I understood, the principal didn’t charge the students for these sessions and he really wanted to help his students do better.

Sadly, 3 of those students died, one of them did self-hypnosis while driving back from the dentist office to reduce the pain. He used the techniques the principal had taught him to control pain due to playing sports. Unfortunately, Hypnosis was portrayed again as a “mind control dangerous” tool when in reality the person or students in this case, are always in control of their experience.

One of the first thigs we learn while doing Hypnosis training is to never practice hypnosis while driving or doing tasks that require our full attention. During the TV show, many things remained unclear: did the principal advise his students never to do hypnosis while driving? did he get permission from the parents or from the student’s physician to work on pain control?

Hypnosis is perfectly safe if we work within the profession’s boundaries and always adhere to our code of ethics and conduct. It made an interesting show to watch but I think, like many other tv crime stories, it misleads the audience by leaving out crucial information and unanswered questions. I hope that in the future, tv shows will do hypnosis justice by showing the fact that it’s powerful and effective but it’s never mind control or dangerous in the hands of trained professionals.
