Hypnosis as a complementary treatment for pain
Hypnosis has been used to treat pain and as an anesthetic in surgeries for centuries and its use and effectiveness is documented in many articles found in medical websites and journals. I believe it’s not more widely used because it is still misunderstood. I’ve been watching the popular netflix TV show “Painkiller” about the horrible effects of oxycotin to treat pain. Many people died because of it, it’s a really heart-breaking true story of money, greed and power at the expenses of people who suffered and took painkillers to try to live their normal lives and be happy again.
Many years ago, I injured my back and I was prescribed an opiate for pain. The pain was really strong but I decided to treat it naturally because I am one to think twice before taking meds if there are other holistic ways to treat a problem. I started using Hypnosis and Accupuncture. Everyday I would visualize myself running and going the things I wanted. I really wanted to get well so bad! In three months I was back to my daily activities, doing yoga and weights. This experience led me to take a course in treating chronic pain and I learned that lifestyle also makes a huge difference. When we think of treating pain, we don’t always think of how the mindset as a tool to recover. I learned that gratitude, good nutrition, positive thinking, social support, spirituality, sleep and movement whenever possible make a huge difference.
There might be cases when the patient might not be open to hypnosis or too skeptical and painkillers might be the only option. Or when the patient simply can’t afford private sessions since Hypnosis is not covered by Ohip and many times not covered by health insurance plans unfortunately. But I believe doctors have an obligation to encourage patients to find alternative ways to deal with pain. I hope the day will come when doctors will look at the patient holistically and ask about their sleep, eating habits, lifestyle, emotional state and more.
I enjoy the challenge of helping people with a high level of pain because I know they are usually highly motivated and want to get better. Think of the placebo effect, the mind is very powerful and even more so when you learn how to use your own inner resources to recover. Hypnosis is not magic but sometimes the results seem magical. I offer a free consultation so that clients learn more about hypnosis and the process. If you feel ready to try a more holistic approach, let me help:-)
