Is it possible to use Nutrition to reduce our biological age? The more I read the more I learn that it is not only possible to do this but some are actually doing it. These days we hear a lot about anti-aging creams, supplements but I think the real deal is anti-aging nutrition.
This is an area that really interests me not only as a Registered holistic Nutritionist but also because I want to be healthy and have energy and vitality to do all the things that make me happy. That means that I will do everything in my power to reduce my risk of getting cancer, alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and other “lifestyle” diseases.
There are a few super important things that anyone can start doing now:
1.- Reduce or better yet eliminate sugar. Just eat fresh or dried fruits (no oil or sugar added please). Why? Sugar is processed and highly inflamatory, not to mention it spikes your blood sugar levels and increases your risk of tyep 2 diabetes and, obviously, any excess calories get stored in your body as fat
2.- Reduce or eliminate alcohol completely. Even one drink can set you back. We were not designed to drink alcohol.
3.- Reduce or better yet eliminate refined flours. It’s not a whole food, it’s highly processed and void of nutrients. It is absorbed in your body as sugar would in many cases since it has a high glycemic index.
4.- Drink purified water. I do not recommend a Britta filter. Check out the Berkey and the Propur filters which add minerals to the water as they filter it. You can get reverse osmosis too but it won’t add any minerals back to your water like magnesium, iron, zinc, etc We need trace minerals and right now most people are mineal deficient. Plastic water bottles should be only for emergencies.
5.- Reduce or eliminate milk and cheese. This one is specially important for women since it’s loaded with hormones (milk is the the cow’s babies, remember?), saturated fat, cholesterol and it’s highly addictive for many people. And most people are allergic to milk anyways. These days there are many plant-based versions, some are healthier than others. But you can make a really good sunflower or cashew cheese at home that will be much healthier.
6.- Reduce toxins as much as possible. QUIT SMOKING. Hypnosis is very effective for quitting smoking, message me to get started today. Change your air filter regularly, get fresh air outside, open your windows. Consume organic foods whenever possible. Get rid of teflon pots and pans, buy ceramic, cast iron or stainless steel. Get rid of air freshener and perfums, they are loaded with toxins and endocrine disruptors. Stop buying anything that comes in a plastic container if possible.
7.- Take quality supplements. For canadians Vitamin D is crucial, also B12, B complex, Omega 3 (there are vegan versions), Vitamin C, but it’s best to see a Holistic Nutritionist that can design a nutrition plan for your needs, lifestyle, physical activity and health and weight goals.
I can go on and on about the latest supplements and I have listed some to the left (spermidine is another one I recently learned about) but if you don’t follow these basic steps it will be more challenging to avoid lifestyle diseases and prolong longevity unless you have some amazing genes, and I know some people have them and I am so jelous of them.
