Anxiety or Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety in Canada has become more prevalent in recent times. How do you know if it’s normal everyday anxiety or an anxiety disorder?

As a certified Hypnotist and Life Coach, I help people navigate through anxious uncertain times and everyday life situations. Anxiety is normal and part of everyday life, but if it affects your everylife or if it affects your sleep, health, work or relationships it means it’s time to seek help. Only your family physician can diagnose an anxiety disorder and prescribe medications if they deem necessary. Hypnosis is a complementary natural treatment that will not interfere with your medication.

If your anxiety has lasted for more than 3 months, please see your family physician who will do a check up on you and possibly blood work to check your thyroid levels, vitamin D, Iron and B12 levels to rule out a medical condition or a vitamin deficiency that could either be causing or contributing to the symptoms. But in many cases, even when the test results are fine, doctors prescribe anti-anxiety medications, which could help in some cases, but they shouldn’t be the first approach! it’s important to ask about the person’s lifestyle, habits, nutrition, relationships, etc. Anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications are like a band aid that doesn’t solve the problem but treats the symptoms. I am not against them at all, but I’ve seen people go through horrible side effects when they get off these drugs. I think they need to be used with caution.

When I work with clients, I like to get to the root cause of the problem. Past experiences could contribute to the issue but it’s important for me not to assume anything and just see what comes up during the sessions. Since I am also a holistic nutritionist, I like to give clients recommendations for improving their eating habits and lifestyle if they are open to it. I also work on increasing emotional intelligence, Confidence and resilience to overcome challenges and obstacles in life more successfully.

Here are 3 things you need to know if you have anxiety:

  1. it’s not your fault. People telling you to  just relax or to stop worrying can only lead to more frustration and psychological pain. Anxiety comes from your subconscious mind and it’s an automatic reaction.
  2. Your genes are not your destiny. If your parents or one of your parents has anxiety, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s genetic and you will suffer endlessly. Your genes are only responsible for 5 to 10 percent of what happens to you.
  3. Anxiety is part of life and anyone can experience it at some point in their lives but you can learn to take back control over your life. And remember that we all need help sometimes so it takes courage to seek help but totally worth it. It all comes down to how much it’s affecting your life.

You can use the 333 rule for anxiety in the moment something triggers you. Just look around to identify 3 objects and 3 sounds, then move 3 body parts.

it’s also useful to practice deep breathing, mindfulness, visualization and positive affirmations which I all incorporate into my sessions.
